autumn

on the farm

A few weeks ago we had a playdate with L&J. J (a mom my age) asked L (her son, Zeb's age) if he knew my name. Zeb enthusiastically replied, "mama!" Then J said, "Wendy." Zeb looked at me and slowly said, "Weennnnndy" - drawing it out slowly like he was savoring and grokking every syllable. The next few days, he tried it out when we were alone. Driving the car, I'd hear, "Wendy?" from the back. "Yes, Zeb?" "Wendy?" "Yes. You have my attention. What do you need?" "Wendy." "Yes, that's my name." After a day or so, he went back to calling me "mama." A couple days ago, I was involved in something and he was trying to get my attention, "mama...mama....MAMA....MAMA....WENDY!" and did that get my attention! :) smart kid.

A while back I wrote that he made up his own songs about a word someone spoken during conversation. As in, "Let's get some coffee" would become a song, "coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee." Recently, he's started singing songs from preschool, like the abcs. He does a fairly good job of getting through a portion of the song, then he'll find a letter he likes (or gets stuck on) and riffs for a while, "a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p l m n o p n o p m n o p w x y and z w x y z w x y and z w x y and z."

My mom wrote Zeb a book called, "Why I like to go to the beach." It's 43 pages of her pictures and words telling Zeb a story about why she likes the beach, the many beaches in the world she has visited, and what she and Zeb have done together near the water in Seattle (Green Lake, the Locks, Shilshole Bay Marina, etc). Everyone who has seen it is convinced she should publish it. Let me know if you want to pre-order a copy. :)
